Retirement Planning

Did you know that the average American man today who retires at age 65 can expect to live an additional 16 years and a woman can expect to live another 19.2 years after retirement?—according to government statistics and life insurance company actuarial charts.?Source: “Planning for the Rest of Your Life: A New Perspective”, Journal of Financial Services Professionals, March 2001

Most people tend to concern themselves with the first 10 years of their retirement, but will you be financially secure during your last ten years?  We recognize your concerns of outliving your investments. We believe that a new approach to retirement is necessary; an approach that encompasses a comprehensive financial strategy.

A retirement strategy has three components:

  • Accumulation – Gathering assets to achieve your goals.
  • Distribution – Using assets to maintain lifestyle in retirement.
  • Conservation and Transfer – Leaving a legacy for future generations.

Using state of the art software we will put together a personal financial strategy illustrating your retirement goal. Monte Carlo simulations will provide a statistical analysis of your ability to meet your goals for a sustainable retirement.  By understanding your time horizon, risk tolerance, current and projected cash flows, income sources and levels we can help you to understand your retirement picture. We will review your strategy with you regularly to ensure you are still on track and recommend any adjustments.

Long Term Care Solutions

Many Americans mistakenly believe that Long Term Care expenses will be shouldered by Medicare or Medicaid.

You should be aware:

  • Medicare is designed to primarily cover skilled, not custodial care.  It also limits coverage to 100 days or less.
  • Medicaid coverage is only available to people with limited means.  The signing of the Deficit Reduction Act in February, 2006 made it more difficult for people to transfer personal assets in order to qualify for Medicaid coverage.

Planning for Long Term Care expenses is a key component of any strategic Retirement or Estate plan. You need to consider what impact Long Term Care expenses could have on your family and on your retirement plan.

Planning for Long Term Care is your responsibility, but you don’t have to figure it out on your own. We can be a resource for you to begin to understand this complicated and often uncomfortable topic and to promote an informed dialogue with your loved-ones.

Small Business Retirement

As a small business owner, you've spent a lifetime nuturing and cultivating your business with the expectation that your business will provide for a long and enjoyable retirement.  Unfortunately that transition is often not as simple as posting a "For Sale" sign in the window and waiting for a buyer to happen along.

At Sterling Manor Financial we work side-by-side with small business owners and third-party industry partners to devise and implement a plan to allow for your transition into retirement.  We can also help you to provide for your faithful employees by offering them solutions to fund their own retirements.  Some of the options  available for both goals include:

  • 401(k) Plans
  • Section 412(e)(3) Plans
  • Defined Benefit Plans
  • SEP/SIMPLE IRAs
  • Section 162 Bonus

In addition, we can help you with your ongoing business planning by working with your legal counsel to devise buy/sell agreements and protection in the event of the loss of a key employee.

Real Estate Services***

Real estate is often a large percentage of one’s investment portfolio.  Housing prices have risen significantly in recent years.  From assistance with buying and selling your home and deferring capital gains tax, to unlocking equity in your residence, the members of Sterling Manor Financial, LLC can work with you.

One member of Sterling Manor Financial is a licensed real estate broker.  As such, he can consult with you when making important decisions regarding the sale of your property.  He can help in selecting the best agency and agent to sell your property as well as provide unbiased assistance in preparing your house for sale.

While capital gains on residential property may enjoy a capital gain exclusion of $250,000 for inpiduals and $500,000 for married couples, capital gains on investment property do not.

There are complicated methods for deferring capital gains taxes on selling investment property or land.  We have the expertise to help you through this process to ensure that an appropriate exchange is selected and that it is done correctly and efficiently.   Exchanges can enjoy capital gains tax deferral provided that a complex series of IRC rules and regulations are followed.
